Catalogue Note
Autograph musical scores by Lortzing ((1801-1851) are exceedingly rare at auction: we have traced only one other such manuscript during the last twenty years.
This a substantial item from Lortzing's comic opera Hans Sachs - an important model for Wagner's Die Meistersinger - which received its first performance at Leipzig on 23 June 1840. It is with this song that Hans Sachs enters the finale of the singing competition against Eoban Hesse. In the autograph full score of the opera in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg, the eighth number is supplied by a copy (see I. Capelle, Chronologisch-thematisches Verzeichnis der Werke von Gustav Albert Lortzing (Cologne, 1994), p. 182).
