Catalogue Note

These cleverly constructed wordless trios for three voices (high, medium and low) - five unnumbered short pieces of increasing harmonic subtlety - are a fine example of the composer's Gebrauchsmusik, and were presented by Hindemith to his friend the pianist Emma Lübbecke-Job on her birthday in 1931 (19 July).  A further number from "Spiel- und Hörschule" is known only from its publication in Pro musica: Organ für neue Musik, i (1932), pp.6ff.: see Paul Hindemith. Sämtliche Werke, Bd. VIII, 3 (2009), p.193. Some sketches for the work are preserved at the Hindemith-Institut, Frankfurt am Main.
