Catalogue Note

Only one volume of poems by Lermontov had been published during his lifetime, and strict censorship restricted the publication of his works; his narrative poem The Demon was therefore published in Germany to avoid problems with censorship. The first edition had been published by Scheider the previous year, but this second edition had a different text, containing the corrections made by Lermontov in 1841. He had started composing the poem in 1829 when only fifteen and regularly revised it until his death in 1841.

very rare. There are no auction records for either this or the first edition, and we have only been able to trace three copies in libraries worldwide.
