- Early nineteenth-century Russian album containing fine watercolours, poems and manuscript music,
- Paper bound book
with a title-page ("Albom 1839 goda") and stippled frontispiece by [Risoval] Olkhovsky, containing about 40 watercolours and acrylic illustrations, landscape views, natural history subjects, military, domestic, character and costume scenes, 45 pages of manuscript music (waltzes, galops, marches and trots ("Riys"), notated for piano on three systems per page), poems and tables, [Russia], c.1837-1839, c.140 leaves, oblong 8vo (120 x 192mm.), including a few blanks, on papers of various colours, contemporary green morocco binding, a few leaves removed, folding leaf of music creased, occasional light staining, a few pages shaved, extremities rubbed

Catalogue Note
A charming album containing exquisite depictions of birds and insects, with colourful scenes of rustic and military life and the music for several military marches. The manuscript text is mainly in verse but also includes captions for the pictures and military itineraries. It would be reasonable to assume that the owner was a military man.
The album itself is partly of English origin - the coloured leaves have a blind-stamped English royal crest with the name "Cuthbert", possibly from St Cuthbert's Mill in south west England, active since the 1700s. However, there is a blind stamp on a leaf of white paper which is definitely of Russian origin, "...Uleimenskoi... Fabrika".
