Catalogue Note

This collection contains many of the dance-forms characteristic of Cuban popular music, precursors of the salsas of the 1940s and 1950s. Rosendo Ruiz 1885-1983), Antonio Fernández, ("Ñico Saquito", 1901-1982), Patricio Ballagas (1879-1920) and Miguel Matamoras (1894-1971, of the "Trio Matamoras") were all trova composer and guitarists, ie intinerant musicians that played an important part in the development of early twentieth-century Cuban popular music.
