requesting that a letter he has written to Pierre Comert of the International Committee on Intellectual Co-operation, the text of which he writes out above, be printed in the Züricher Zeitung; in the letter to Comert, Einstein states that he has come lately to the conclusion that the League has neither the energy nor the goodwill necessary to fulfil its great task, maintaining that, as a serious pacifist, he therefore considers it improper to be connected in any way with the same organization ("...Als ernsthafte Pazifist halte ich es deshalb nicht für richtig mit demselben irgendwie verbunden zu sein..."), and asking that his name be taken off the list of members of the Commission, 1 page, 8vo (22 x 14cm), cut down from a larger leaf, written on the reverse of printed stationery of the Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft, no place or date [probably Zürich, 21 March 1923], small tears to edges, slightly affecting text at head of page, horizontal and diagonal folds

Shortly after joining the League of Nations' Committee on Intellectual Co-operation in May 1922, Einstein tended his resignation, prompted apparently by fears over his safety as a Jew in Berlin. Persuaded to reconsider, Einstein later resigned a second time on 21 March 1923: it is this second resignation, apparently prompted by the French occupation of the Ruhr, which forms the subject of the present letter, a copy of which appeared in the Zürich press on 22 March 1923.
