primary sources for remarque's life after he left germany are scarce. the present series of letters is an important new source for biographers and scholars. Remarque was persona non grata in Germany following the publication of All Quiet on the Western Front, which was one of the books publicly burnt by the Nazis in Berlin in 1933.

When passing through Paris en route to America to work on the film script of his new book, he tries to persuade himself that war will not come and that the situation is merely a 'dress rehearsal' (Generalprobe), though he notes that the Queen Mary is fully booked by Americans who are fleeing Europe. He recounts the problems he has encountered with European publishers over the first work he wrote after his return (The Spark of Life, which dealt with Nazi extermination camps), announcing that he has just finished the second draft after working ten and twelve hours a day

He complains that his publishers in both America and Europe are withholding advances, although reviews have been generally good, and announces that he has started another book ("das zweite Buch"), though in a subsequent letter he states that he may throw it away and start again, as he is not satisfied with it. In other letters he asks her for details of procedures at Ellis Island and whether lawyers were allowed to go there to see the immigrants (she had been detained there in 1939), notes that he has been swamped by congratulatory telegrams on his 60th birthday, and laments his failing health.
