Catalogue Note

Theodor Herzl (1860-1904), the father of Zionism, was much affected by the Dreyfus case in Paris and believed that the creation of a Jewish state would improve relations between Jews and other nations. His manifesto, first published in German in 1896 and swiftly translated into other languages (as here), resulted in an international conference in Basel at which the Zionist movement was created.

This Yiddish version was printed in Kolomea, now Kolomyya in western Ukraine, but in the late nineteenth century it was in Galicia, an autonomous region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and about half the population was Jewish.
