Catalogue Note
First edition and the first of only six books printed in Ortona (in the Abruzzo) by Soncino in 1518, and the only printing press active in Ortona in the hand-press period. This is the only book in which Soncino combined the use of Roman, Greek and Hebrew types; there are even a few words in Ethiopic, which is one of the earliest appearance of Ethiopic in print.
Colonna (c. 1460-c. 1540) was a Franciscan theologian who taught Greek and philosophy at the University of Rome. In this work, written as a dialogue, Colonna defends Johann Reuchlin, the German scholar of Hebrew, against his contemporaries who were angered by his promotion of Hebrew as a subject most worthy of study.
