This is the second edition of Isidore of Seville's great encyclopedia, first published the previous year by Günther Zainer in Augsburg. There were at least seven incunabular editions, attesting to its popularity.

Mentelin was the first printer in Strassburg, he set up shop in 1460 and continued until his death in 1478. He had previously worked with Johann Gutenberg himself.
