Catalogue Note

The composer notes that "Traditionally it's four temperaments, of course. But these five movements do not depict the traditional 'humours' (choleric, phlegmatic, sanguine, melancholic) of medieval humanism (though perhaps a couple overlap). Rather, they are five states of mind, evoking human moods shared in varying mixes and proportions by everybody".  The oboe plays mainly the cor anglais in the second, third and fourth movements.  Robin Holloway has been a lecturer and then Professor at the University of Cambridge for over 30 years.  Two works by Holloway were given at this year's BBC Proms, both based on the music of Robert Schumann.
