Description

  • Remarkable, early autograph letter signed ("J. Joachim"), with autograph musical quotation, to an unnamed violinist
  • ink on paper
written from London when the violinist was in his thirteenth year, providing a descriptive survey of the violin styles of the major performers of his day, about Mendelssohn, Schumann, Rossini, Ernst and many others, announcing the imminent arrival of Mendelssohn in the city, illustrating this point with a six-bar quotation from a work by Mendelssohn, discussing the works he might he might perform at his debut with the Royal Philharmonic Society on the 27th [of May], expressing reservations about playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto, comparing the London orchestra unfavourably with that of Leipzig ("...ich finde, dass die philharmonischen Concerte den Ruhm, den sie haben, nicht verdienen..."), criticising Ernst's interpretation of his Gesangs-Scene, announcing the arrival in London of Ernst, Sivori, Pott, Gulomy and Bossy, relating news of Ole Bull's financial success in America, enquiring after Schumann and others in Leipzig, 4 pages, 8vo (20 x 12.5cm), watermarked "WHATMAN 1843", no place or date, [London, May 1844] browning, tiny burn-hole to first leaf, very slightly affecting text, a few small stains, light creasing
