Condition

The painting is in good condition, as is the canvas, which is clear and taut. The texture and collage are also in good condition. The colour of the actual painting are softer in reality.

Catalogue Note

Heri Dono is one of the original and foremost enfant terribles of Indonesian Contemporary Art. A critically acclaimed, internationally curated artist who has exhibited his work at prestigious museums and art institutions, such as the Asia Society in New York, among others, Heri Dono has always been ahead of his time, producing a body of intellectual, provocative, and boundary-pushing works since the 1980s. Humanity was his inspiration and amusing audacity was his trademark. He creates a world filled with comical, logic-defying and sometimes grotesque characters reminiscent of figures from wayang lore. Incidentally, shadow puppetry is traditionally used as indirect social (and sometimes political) commentaries, which is also a theme that dominates Heri Dono's repertoire.

However his works might be interpreted, he is truly inimitable in creating a meditation between chaos and order and placing in the context of our social reality. By presenting absurdities, he dares viewers to question and to reassess who they are, the world they live in and where they're going. As he articulates in his own words, "An artist is someone who wants to serve art - but more important to me is, how can art serve humanity!"
