Condition

Sold in a modern wood frame. The drawing has been laid down relatively recently. There is one very small light fox mark at the centre of the right margin, but otherwise the sheet is absolutely clear and fresh. The remains of a very slight horizontal crease across the centre of the sheet, although this is only visible at the right margin and does not affect the drawing at all. The medium is very strong and fresh and the condition excellent. The chalk of the original drawing is much stronger than the catalogue illustration and the paper not quite as yellow.

Catalogue Note

Bonnard's depictions of his wife Marthe form a significant part of the artist's œuvre, with some of his most important paintings showing her and their stunning house, Le Bosquet, in the south of France. The intimacy of Bonnard's drawings shows an artist deeply in love: he was profoundly influenced by his feelings for Marthe, especially in his later career when this work was probably executed.

The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Guy-Patrice and Michel Dauberville.
