Catalogue Note

The importance of Jongkind to Impressionist painting is rarely acknowledged but he worked with two of the key artists of the time, Eugene Boudin and Claude Monet, who raised painting en plein air beyond the slapdash sketches of previous schools. The present work is typical of Jongkind's drawings in its spontaneity and simple representation of a view over the suburbs of Paris – an unusual subject for an artist more commonly associated with the ports of the Netherlands.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Comité Jongkind under the sponsorship of Galerie Brame et Lorenceau.  The drawing will be included in the forthcoming critical catalogue of Jongkind's graphic work by Galerie Brame & Lorenceau and J. Sinizergues.
