Description

  • Pauline Auzou
  • a drapery study
  • Black and white chalk on blue paper

Provenance

By descent from the artist,
sale, London, Christie's, 6 July 1999, part of lot 200

Condition

Unframed. Window mounted. The paper is an irregular shape and is probably cut at the upper left. The upper edge is a little crumpled, although this seems to be inherent to the paper rather than later damage. There are some remains of light creases, particularly at the upper right corner. A vertical crease, from near the centre of the left edge downwards, has attracted a little surface dirt. A very small tear at the lower edge, 7cm in from the left corner, neatly repaired, verso. A small light brown spot to the centre right of the lower margin. Overall the sheet is in very good condition: the blue paper is still very fresh and the chalk still strong.

Catalogue Note

Pauline Desmarquet Auzou was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault.  She first exhibited at the Salon in 1793 and continued to do so until 1817, being awarded a First Class medal in 1806.  She was a teacher, primarily with female students, and received numerous commissions, both from the French State and from other institutional and noble clients.

This drawing was among a group of studies which descended through the artist's family to the sale at Christie's in 1999.
