Catalogue Note
This drawing came from an album, probably assembled in the 17th century, which was partially dispersed at the Christie's sale in 1980. It contained, among works by other artists, a large group of studies of heads by Arpino. The drawings were numbered, as is the present example, and many bore contemporary attributions.
Professor Herwarth Röttgen, who commented on the drawings at the time of the 1980 sale, dated this study circa 1591-3.
