Catalogue Note

Although the present sheet cannot be connected with any known painting by Diziani, the rapidly handled pen and ink and energetic red chalk under-drawing are typical of his style, and comparable with the technique seen in the important, connected drawing by the artist sold, New York, Sotheby's, 23 January 2008, lot 189.  The present drawing may have been made in connection with a series of compositions depicting the Passion, such as the one that Diziani painted for the Duomo of Motta di Livenza, near Treviso.1
