  • esther before ahasuerus
  • Red chalk, the upper right corner made up

Provenance

Sale, London, Sotheby's, 13 July 1972, lot 32;
with Katrin Bellinger, Munich, from whom bought by the present owner

Condition

Unframed. Laid down. The lower left corner and lower part of the left margin have been made up. Also the upper right corner, both visible in the catalogue reproduction. Several creases running from the upper and lower margins. Surface dirt. Some wash has been applied with a brush to disguise the restoration of the upper corner (visible in the catalogue). Four tiny oil stains on the figure of Esther. The drawing appears slightly cut at the left edge. Some defects in the paper in two spots near the figure of Esther, barely visible. The original drawing is much warmer and the red chalk stronger than the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

According to Francesca Baldassari's recent list of paintings by Volterrano, no painting of this subject is known.This must, however, be an early compositional study, perhaps for a painting that was never completed.
