Catalogue Note

FOOT NOTE TO GO ON THE INTRODUCTIVE DPS. TITLE: JEWELS FROM THE COLLECTION OF DONA LILY MARINHO.

On 15th May 2008, Sotheby's Geneva was honoured to offer a selection of 63 jewels from the Collection of Doña Lily Marinho. In the following pages, we offer another four lots from her collection. These include an impressive emerald and diamond parure –an elegant and glamorous set of jewels that Dona Lily particularly loved and often wore at formal receptions.

Doña Lily's happy marriage to Horacio de Carvalho, one of the most influential men in Brasil, lasted 45 years, decades during which as a result of her beauty, education and culture, her popularity and fame assumed mythical proportions.  After 5 years of widowhood, Lily married the Brazilian press tycoon Roberto Marinho, who is said to have been secretly in love with her for more that 50 years. The jewels offered in May 2008 and the four lots described in this catalogue are a testament to the admiration and esteem held by two extraordinary men for the truly exceptional woman they loved

Universally adored and respected throughout the country, Doña Lily has been a goodwill ambassador for Unesco and is still considered undoubtedly Brazil's 'First lady'.
