Catalogue Note

By family tradition this jewel and the other three brooches, lots 336, 338 and 339 were each gifted to one of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's goddaughters; one, the rock crystal rose brooch, on the occasion of their Christening and the others were given as tokens of friendship. Born Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (4th August 1900 -30th March 2002) she married Albert, Duke of York in 1923, in 1936 becoming Queen consort of King George VI until his death in 1952. Her husband unexpectedly became King after Edward VIII abdicated to marry Mrs Wallis Simpson.
