Condition

a) Laid down on mount. There is slight discolouration at the edges of the sheet from where it is glued on the verso. Some minor surface dirt, at the lower right corner and near the centre right. Overall, however, the sheet is in good condition and the watercolour is still strong and fresh. b) Laid down at the edges to mount, which has caused a slight shadowing to the margins. Otherwise the sheet is in excellent condition, the watercolour very fresh.

Catalogue Note

Rosa Spinulifolia Dematratiana is a hybrid between two wild species of roses which puzzled (and excited) rose-lovers when it was first found growing naturally in Switzerland.  It is still cultivated today.  The engraved design has a detail of a leaf added near the lower left corner.

Rosa Farinosa is a form of Rosa villosa. This beautiful species, common in cool areas throughout northern Europe, is noted for its grey leaves. The particular plant that Redouté painted came from Germany.
