Condition
Laid down on mount. A slight shadowing at the edges from where the drawing has been glued on the verso. There are some very small patches at the lower edge where the white preparation has rubbed, and the more yellow colour of the vellum is showing through. At the very centre of the sheet, to the left of the main stem of the rose, the ink has smudged slightly, although this appears to have happened at the time the drawing was being made, rather than being later damage.

Catalogue Note
Redouté called this Rosa Centifolia Burgundiaca but his colleague Thory named it La Cent-feuilles de Bordeaux; clearly the two could not agree on their wines. Probably still in cultivation today, it is very close to the popular 'Centifolia' rose, raised (and much painted) in the Netherlands.
