Centring on a circular-cut zircon of brown tint, the wings decorated with polychrome guilloché enamel, highlighted with old mine and circular-cut diamonds, maker's marks C&AG, pendant loop, fitted gilt tooled case, C&A Giuliano. 115 Piccadilly, London, embossed M.B. May 20. 1903.
Cf: Castellani & Giuliano, The Judith H. Siegel Collection, Sotheby's, New York, 6th December 2006, lot 135 for a similar example of a gem-set winged brooch by Carlo Giuliano.
Giuliano used the winged motif in many jewellery designs and it was very popular during the 19th Century amongst other jewellers. The image of the 'winged globe' was considered a symbol of protection in Ancient Egypt and might be found placed above a doorway or tomb it was believed to prevent evil from entering.
