Catalogue Note
In Tsibi Geva's works, the terrazzo is an everyday object which has the potential to become a potent symbol of public consciousness and complexities. Doreen LeVitte Harten explains: "Balata is the Hebrew term for the terrazzo floor tiles is a part of the Israeli's daily environment. Balata is an emotionally charged word because it is also the name of a refugee camp in the West Bank. On the other hand, the image of the terrazzo flooring is not a call for protest. It only implies protest in a very vague way known only to the inner circle of those Israelis who choose to interpret the work as protest. It could be interpreted with the same logic of choice as the starry night transformed to the artistic vocabulary of the Middle East."
