Catalogue Note

This work, one of several self-portraits from this era in Kikoine's career, shows the stylistic influence of his lifetime colleague Chaim Soutine. The two artists met in Minsk, about 1905; Kikoine had recently moved to Minsk from Vitebsk with his family, while Soutine came from a small village near Minsk. Together they moved to Vilnius before settling in Paris (Kikoine in 1912, Soutine in 1913).
