Catalogue Note

'His nudes are self-contained, turning their faces away in a romantic gesture of modesty, striking contrast to the enticement of Matisse's harem-trousered nudes... These women, softened and full as the bodies of Renoir's nudes, have a substance and naturalism which makes them immediately pleasing. They are presented in a manner to suggest the artist's ease with his model and her naturalness with him' (L. Banner & P. Fairbanks, Lebasque 1865-1937, San Francisco, 1986, p. 74).
