Condition
All edges visible as framed. Sheet is attached to mount by hinges in upper corners. Colors are very fresh, vibrant. Some skinning to sheet verso and associated remnants of old hinges. In generally very good condition, apart from craquelure in small white square, center right; tiny spots of pigment loss all visible to naked eye, mainly in white shapes. Inscribed in pencil bottom of sheet verso BAUER FN 99.

Catalogue Note
The abstract juxtapositions of geometric shapes and whimsical use of color in Rudolf Bauer's Two Counterpoints are typical of the artist's best works in the 1920s. Bauer's signature "Bauer Baut," roughly translates to "Bauer Built" or "Made by Bauer," is characteristic of his work during this period. There are strong visual parallels between Bauer's Two Counterpoints and the watercolors of Wassily Kandinsky in the 1920s. Twenty-three years younger than Kandinsky, Bauer was invited to participate in a group show at Herwarth Walden's avant-garde Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin in 1915 and was subsequently given a solo exhibition there in 1917. Kandinsky had his first one-man show at Galerie Der Sturm in 1912.
