Catalogue Note

The present lot is an excellent example of the daring shape watches that have brought Patek Philippe pieces to the forefront of fashion in every era. The 1930s and 1940s in particular saw a strong emphasis on square, rectangular and driver's style watches, with experimentation in lug and case design.

A similar watch, Ref. 556, is illustrated In Huber, M. & Banbery, A., Patek Philippe wristwatches. Like the present model, Ref. 555, it bears unusual tubular lugs, however the lugs are faceted rather than round.
