Condition

This painting has never been removed from its original stretcher and has never been cleaned or restored in any way. The canvas has become relaxed and some cracking has developed. However, the surface can be evened out considerably without lining the picture. There are some drips of brown matter on the surface here and there and a few tiny losses in the lower right and in the forehead of the figure. The painting is in very fresh condition. One needs to be sensitive about restoration in order to hopefully avoid lining the canvas. The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
