Catalogue Note
Born in Russia in 1898, Grigory Gluckmann studied in Moscow before leaving for Paris in 1924. Met with great enthusiasm from collectors and critics alike, he exhibited widely in Paris and London before visiting America in 1937 for his first New York exhibition. He went on to exhibit in cities across the country, including Los Angeles, Phoenix and Dallas.
Gluckmann's exquisite talent stems from his technical skill and his unique artistic vision. Although a master of various media and suited to render any image, he is best known for his elegant oils of the female figure in a wide range of settings—at the ballet, on the stage, in the dressing room, at the theater, at the race course. In Daydreams, one of his most successful works from this series, Gluckmann captures a private moment between two young girls seated at a table. The artist's delicate and intricate brushwork conveys their radiant beauty, while the teacup and rose serve as props, emphasizing the exaggerated perspective of the composition.
