Condition
The painting is warmer in tone and more red than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a good effective relining which has not flattened the paint surface. To the naked eye the painting appears in good condition. A restored tear (5 by 5 cm) centre right to the right of the sitter's sleeve, as well as some restored damage (again 5 by 5 cm) centre left are the only noticeable damages but these have been sympathetically restored. Inspection under UV light reveals very minor localised retouchings in the background.
Overall in good original condition with the contrast of the the textures well preserved. Offered in a carved wooden frame in good condition.
