A rare Meissen tureen and cover circa 1738-40

Description

  • 31cm., 12¼in.high
modelled by J.J.Kändler, with ram's head handles, the body of fluted oval form with moulded borders, the domed cover with a coronet finial, painted in a kakiemon palette with a pair of cranes standing amidst rushes and other birds in flight, set with ram's head handles ( losses to finial, chips to inner flange of cover and rims).



 

Condition

Tureen- overall in good condition. There are two adjacent shallow chips to the footrim, the largest approx. 0.75m. by 0.5cm. Cover- top of finial lacking. Three chips to inner flange, approx. 2in. by ½in. and 3in. by ½in.

Catalogue Note

Kändler's work notes record, in August 1733: 1 gr.ovale Terrine mit Zierrathen versehen, anstatt der Henkel befinden sich 2 Bocksköpfe mit allerhand Zierrathen, oben auf der Decke ist Knopf mit durchbrochenen Zierrathen ( I large oval tureen decorated with ornament, instead of the handles there are two goat heads with all manner of ornament, on the cover the knop had pierced ornament )  

A very similar example was sold Sotheby's London, 28th June, 1973, lot 54
