  • each 38cm high;1ft. 3in.
one cast with a feathered turban above a suit of armour and military trophies, the other with a feathered classical helmet above suit of armour flanked by military trophies, each on a scrolled acanthus leaf cast base on gadrooned toupie feet

Condition

In overall very good condition. Gilding much more golden, warmer and more attractive than in catalogue photograph. Some very minor rubbing to gilt-bronze and verde gris, which does not detract from the piece. The foot of one chenet has been slightly reduced in height. The backs of the chenets probably originally incorporated iron supports.

Catalogue Note

This pair of chenets is loosely based upon the more elaborate pair in the Getty Museum in Malibu, illustrated by Clarissa Bremer-David, Decorative Arts, An Illustrated summary catalogue of the collections of the J.Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 1993, p.107 no.176. Another related model, from the Château de Hautefort, was also exhibited in Exposition de L'Art Français au XVIIIe Siècle, Exhibition Catalogue, Charlottenburg Palace, Copenhagen, 1935.
