Delivered circa 1785 to the Garde Général des meubles de la Couronne
Sold Palais D'Orsay, Paris, 21 June 1977, lot 93.
The mark GG below a crown is probably the mark of the administration of the Garde-Meuble during the reign of Louis XVI. However, P. Verlet has suggested that it may be the brand employed for furniture delivered for the Palais des Tuileries between 1784 and 1790.
Roger Vanderuse, dit La Croix (1727-1799) and his son Pierre-Roger I Vandercruse were both actively engaged in supplying the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne under Thierry de Ville-d'Avay between 1784 and 1790. Their various functions, as well as the furniture they supplied, are discussed C. Roinet, Roger Vandercruse dit La Croix, Paris, 2000, pp. 107-112.
