Catalogue Note
The date June 1st 1794 which is inscribed on the design for a naval captain refers to the battle known as the Glorious First of June, the first and fiercest battle to take place between the English and French navies during the French Revolutionary Wars (see also the design by Nollekens for the monument to Captains John Harvey and John Hutt, lot 570).
