Catalogue Note
Dalou's original marble bust of Boussingault was ordered by the State in 1888 and placed in the Institut Français. Though his bust was posthumous, Dalou had known the sitter, which would account for its spontaneous quality.
Jean-Baptiste Boussingault (1801-1887) sometimes called 'Le Père de l'Agronomie', was the agricultural chemist who identified the biological nitrogen cycle, by demonstrating that plants do not absorb nitrogen from the air but from nitrates in the soil. He became a deputy in the 1848 Revolution, and it may have been his political sympathies that had brought him together with Dalou.
