The present bronze was cast from a terracotta maquette (no.78) now in the Petit Palais collection. It seems that only three bronze versions were cast by Hébrard. La Défense de la Patrie flanked the right side of the monument to Léon Gambetta in Bordeaux, which was commissioned to Dalou in 1901 and unveiled in 1905.
