The original terracotta maquette for this model (no. 335) is in the collections of the Petit Palais as is another bronze version (no.1185).
This subject is the first version of the project for the monument to Léon Gambetta intended for the place du Carrousel in Paris, which was never executed. Dalou conceived the monument in honour of Gambetta in 1901 in Bordeaux using the model of 'La Défense de la Patrie' (see lot 380).
