RELATED LITERATURE

Bruton 1979, p.30-1

This model of Homage to Priapus is related to Carrier-Belleuse's famous 1863 marble of a Bacchante, exhibited at the Salon, bought for the Tuileries and now in the Musee d'Orsay.  It is a prime example of the sculptor's admiration of eighteenth century models by artists such as Clodion and Marin.

A group entitled Offrande a Bacchus which featured in Carrier's sales in 1874 and 1883 may be identifiable with the present composition, but the same sales also included a Bacchante au terme, a description which equally fits this model.
