Condition
General, standard surface abrasions. Gilding rubbed in areas . Two hairline casting cracks on the proper left side of the neck (stable). The screws to attach the wings on the reverse are probably later. Otherwise, overall very good condition.

Catalogue Note
Patricia Wengraf connected the present group with the only other known work in bronze by the Flemish sculptor Jan-Baptist van Helderberghe, a group of Saint Martin and the Beggar published in 1957 when it was in the collection of Leon Bagrit. Both bear the same initialled signature of JB.V.H.F.T and compare well stylistically and in their finishing. These accord with the few extant large commissions by van Helderberghe, including the marble tomb of Bishop Philip Erard van der Noot at St Bavo's in Ghent.
