Flemish, first half 17th century

olive-gold patina beneath dark brown lacquer, on later velvet-covered wood base applied with silver mounts inscribed: Car. Cajet S.R.E Prbr Card Stampa/ Ss Me'd Eccle Arch (referring to the previous owner, Cardinal Carjetano Stampa, archbishop of Milan) and an armorial shield with the arms of the Stampa di Sancio of Milan.

Similar figures of flagellators were in the Palazzo Schifanoia, Ferrara, attributed by Weihrauch (op.cit.) to the Master of the Genre Figures. Another was sold at Sotheby's London, April 17, 1980,  lot 220 and  similarly relates to Giambolognas genere figures such as the birdcatchers (see London, Edinburg and Avery and Radcliffe (Edinburgh, London and Vienna 1978, op.cit, nos.130-139).
