Condition
General surface abrasions. Age cracks. Small losses throughout. Some flaking paint and veneer. Worming and some losses to wood cross. Some nails and screws (to attach mounts) are replaced. The silver mounts and some of the gilt mounts (i.e. pendant flower chains in upper section of base the clouds and the veil in the central section, and perhaps the gilt and silver mounts—including central cartouche—on the lower edges) are old but associated from another piece. Some small breaks or cracks to some mounts. Overall very attractive and good quality.

This opulent composition is typical of Late Baroque devotional metalwork produced in Rome by the artists of the papal court. The corpus is derived from the popular Cristo Vivo modeled by Ercole Ferrata under the supervision of Gianlorenzo Bernini (for a discussion of the problems in authorship of the design of the corpus, and the influence of Algardi, see Wittkower op. cit.).
