The present finely cast set of busts, as Montagu notes, "display strong Algardesque features" (op. cit. p. 347), and may be echoes of lost designs by Algardi or his circle. Their size as well as the presence of the Ventimiglia family coat of arms on each socle suggests that they may have been part of a decorative scheme (probably also including the remaining five apostles) for a private chapel.
