Catalogue Note

Unlike most sculptors, Laliberté made no preparatory drawings for his bronzes, making only clay maquettes.  He used models only for his busts and portraits.

Apart from his large monumental sculptures installed in public places, he did many portraits and models of people engaged in the mundane laborious tasks of rural Quebec including this fine head of Le Cultivateur.  He gave all these hard working individuals a sense of dignity, worth and valour.
