Catalogue Note

This is a very early work, painted in 1909 when Fortin was just twenty-one years old.  He was in Edmonton at the time and went to study at the Art Institute of Chicago that same year.  It was not until 1911 that he first started to exhibit on a regular basis at the Art Association of Montreal.

In the background is a glimpse of the village of Ste. Rose and its impressive elm trees which would become iconic in Fortin's paintings.
