Catalogue Note
Through his works on paper, Riopelle was able to express a sense of dynamic energy. The foundations of Riopelle's works are generated by nature's own patterns and movements and here, on the surface of the paper, he has created a composition with movement, breath and vibration.
Standing before a clean sheet of illustration board, almost as if in a trance, he would sweep his brush across the untouched sheet leaving lines and patterns that pulsate. The tight, careful and highly considered application of daubed paint have given way to an intuitive understanding of the relationships between form and colour and this process clarifies his personal growth towards the objectives of the Automatiste movement.
Yseult Riopelle notes that this work likely dates from 1976.
