Catalogue Note
This painting is typical of the woodland scenes Johnston painted in the last two years of his life around Midland, Ontario. He has created an atmospheric painting of the sun's rays filtering through the leaves and needles of the tall trees illuminating sections of the foreground in a dappled manner on an early spring day.
The impasto of the brushwork defines light from the shade and interprets the different shades of green from the early pea-greens of new leaves to the darker deciduous and conifers and the new shoots of grass on the forest floor.
