Condition
This work has been viewed under UV light and it is in very good condition. As the edges are not under a frame, some paint loss has occurred, especially at the bottom edge. This work is one of very few painted on pressed board, most were on panel. The back of the board is very rough as if it has been at one time covered with labels. There also appears to be some writing which has been erased.

Catalogue Note
Banting, celebrated as a Nobel Prize winner for the discovery of insulin, enjoyed painting with his friend and mentor A.Y. Jackson. Together they explored and documented the Arctic, the North West Territories, Quebec, Cobalt and many other locations. This painting was given as a gift to Dr. G. W. Ross, Banting's friend and colleague. Ross had a cottage at the mouth of the French River and Banting was there with Jackson in 1930. Ross lent a sketch, titled Cottage at the French River, to the Banting Memorial Art Exhibition at Hart House at the University of Toronto in 1943, which is probably this work. Like Jackson, Banting worked outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions and seemed to be inspired by the challenges this posed.
