Condition

This painting has been viewed under UV and it is in excellent condition. The varnish is discoloured. There are a few minute white paint splotches. There are four small touch ups in lower portion (grass area). We would like to thank "In Restauro Conservart Inc." for examing this painting and their original notes are available upon request to Sotheby's.

Catalogue Note

In this enchanting early autumn sketch of 1910, MacDonald has emerged as a confident artist illustrated by his application of textured paint, sensitivity to light and the sense of movement from the clouds in the blue sky.

MacDonald wrote about his captivation with Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Peña (1807-1876), a landscape artist from the European Barbizon School:  

I am inclined to look on myself as a forest specialist. Standing back, contemplating that little picture, I seem to get a clear feeling, though faint and far off, that someday, I too would be an artist and produce similar things.
